They met in Costa Rica, on a summer community service program for teenagers. Within days they had fallen in ○1_________.
“It was like a movie,” said Gabrielle Brown, 17, sighing. For one romantic month, they worked and played together. “My favorite moment was when we swam together in a lagoon under a ○2_________,” said Eric Rodriguez, 16. Said Ms. Brown: “I remember kissing him in the rain.”
It had to come to an ○3_________, of course. Ms. Brown went back home to high school in Ann Arbor, Mich., Mr. Rodriguez to 11th grade in Philadelphia. Still, in the ensuing months, they have watched movies together on Netflix, stared into each other’s eyes for hours on end and once spent the ○4_________ together ― all despite being hundreds of miles apart.
These days, thanks to Skype, summer really can be ○5_________.
“We would usually Skype for about three hours a day,” said Ms. Brown of the couple’s first months apart. Once, she said, they both fell asleep on their beds next to their computers. “At one point I just listened to him ○6_________,” she said.
Skype, the Internet video conferencing service, has been a godsend for parents with children away at ○7_________, for far-flung relatives keeping tabs on one another, and, of course, for long distance lovers. But with autumn the high season for Skyping among teenagers returning to real life after summer adventures away, some may be starting to wonder: Are summer ○8_________ meant to be continued or are they better off as a sweet ○9_________?

요즘은 스카이프 덕분에 여름이 실제로 계속 이어질 수 있는 세상입니다.
“우리는 보통 하루 3시간 정도 스카이프를 합니다.” 커플이 처음으로 떨어진 뒤 몇 달을 지내본 브라운 양의 말니다. 어떤 때는 둘 다 컴퓨터 바로 옆 침대에서 잠든다고 합니다. “어느 때는 그가 막 잠드는 소리를 듣지요.”
인터넷 화상회의 서비스인 스카이프는 먼 대학에 간 자녀를 둔 부모, 멀리 떨어져 살지만 서로 관심 있는 친척에게 ‘깜짝 선물’이지요. 떨어져 있는 연인은 물론이고요. 그러나 여름의 모험이 끝난 후 실생활로 돌아온 10대들 사이에서 가을이 스카이프 성수기가 되면서 이런 의문이 들 수도 있습니다. ‘여름 낭만은 계속될 의미가 있을까? 아니면 달콤한 기억으로 끝나는 게 좋을까?’
Oliver Field, a sophomore at Occidental College in Los Angeles, knows too well how the Internet can transform a summer love affair into a long-term Skype affair. He and his girlfriend, Elizabeth Chamberlain, a sophomore at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., had spent many summers as friends at their West Coast camp before finally becoming a ○10_________ two summers ago.
“It is definitely not the easiest situation,” Mr. Field said, citing meddling ○11_________ who pop up on the screen. “But at least with Skype we can actually see each other’s facial ○12_________ when we are apart.”
His girlfriend does not always find Skype as easy. “He was sick one morning and felt so ill that I stayed on Skype with him all day to make sure he was O.K.,” she said. “But then I also had to sit there and watch while two ○13_________, who are his friends, came in and gave him soup. I wanted to be there instead of them.”

그의 여자친구는 스카이프가 항상 쉽지만은 않다는 것을 압니다. “남자친구가 어느 날 아침 아팠는데 종일 스카이프에 달라붙어 괜찮다고 위로해 줬지요. 이때 남친의 두 여성 친구가 방에 와서 수프를 주는 것을 앉아서 지켜보고 있어야만 했지요. 그들 대신 내가 거기 있고 싶었지요.”
Lauren Trefny, a senior at the University of Virginia, said she will never ○14_________ this last summer in Italy, and not just because of the fabulous art course she attended. “I met him in Rome,” she said, dreamily. “He was Danish, sweet, intelligent and handsome. It was so romantic.”
When they parted a few months ago, they turned to Skype, but before long, they discovered it didn’t work so well. The six-hour time difference between them made scheduling hard. “On the one hand we could open up so much more on Skype than we could on a ○15_________,” Ms. Trefny said. “But then one of us would often miss a Skype date. And then it became impossible because we would argue, and you can then see how upset the other person is but you can’t reach out and touch them or comfort them.”

Ms. Trefny used Skype in a previous long-distance relationship, with her high school boyfriend. But she said they knew each other well enough to ○16_________ those difficulties. “Skype might be a way to ○17_________ the magic of a summer relationship,” she said, “but I am not sure it is the best way to ○18_________ one.”
Indeed, though Gabrielle Brown and Eric Rodriguez have visited each other three times since they left Costa Rica in late July, they decided at the airport on their last visit to ○19_________ up.
“We love each other and can see spending our future together, but right now it is too hard for both of us,” Ms. Brown said. Their ○20_________began to suffer, she said, from all the Skyping. Added Mr. Rodriguez, sadly: “I find it hard to look at her but not be able to hold her or kiss her.”

“우리는 서로 사랑하고 미래를 함께 보내리라는 것을 알 수 있어요. 하지만 지금 당장 우리 둘 다 너무 힘듭니다.” 스카이핑 때문에 자신들의 학업이 힘들어지기 시작했다고 브라운 양은 말합니다. 로드리게스 군은 슬프게 덧붙입니다. “그녀를 보면서도 안거나 키스할 수 없다는 게 힘들어요.”
