Lia Batkin, the bride, descends an illuminated staircase as she makes an entrance at the start of her wedding ceremony to Seth Kaplan at Tribeca Rooftop. The New York Times

IF, as legend has it, soul mates are bound by an invisible thread, then by the time Lia Batkin and Seth Kaplan discovered each other, their lives had already been woven into a dense tapestry.
For years, their paths crossed and crossed again, but never quite touched. Both attended the University of Wisconsin, where her boyfriend and his girlfriend were close, yet Ms. Batkin and Mr.Kaplan were never introduced.

There was the bar on the corner of Mr. Kaplan’s street that he frequented nearly every day and where Ms. Batkin worked for two years. And yet, she couldn’t recall having served him.

Ms. Batkin과

There were even the family connections ― his sister had attended school with her cousin, his mother’s tennis partner was one of her  grandmother’s oldest friends ― and the attempts at matchmaking that, unbeknown to Ms.Batkin and Mr. Kaplan, didn’t get off the ground.
That changed in the fall of 2005, when the two finally met at a bar where they’d joined friends who were dating. “She caught my eye right away,” said Mr. Kaplan, who was then a senior account manager at the Kenneth Cole fashion and accessories company in New York. “And we really connected on a lot of different levels.”
“I spent the whole night talking to her and just mustered up enough courage to ask her for her number,” added Mr. Kaplan, who is now 31.
But Ms. Batkin, then the director of fashion and luxury goods for Robb Report magazine in New York, had decided to play hard-to-get and
told him to ask his friend Steve Sassoon for it.

Mr. Kaplan did so the very next day. But Mr. Sassoon said he couldn’t give out Ms. Batkin’s number because he wanted to set her up with his brother. The charade went on for two months, with Mr. Kaplan periodically checking on Ms. Batkin’s availability, and his friend always replying that she was still unavailable.
And then one serendipitous Saturday evening, Mr. Kaplan bumped into Ms. Batkin at another bar and determined that she was, and all along had been, unattached.
Immediately besotted, they talked and laughed until the sun came up.

Two weeks later, Mr. Kaplan told her, “I knew from the moment I met you that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you.”
As his words filled the room, a big smile crossed her face, Ms. Batkin recalled, and she blurted out, “Me, too.”

“Me too.”
