영어작문을 잘하기 위해 가장 중요한 것은 많이 쓰는 것입니다. 가장 효과적인 방법은 영어일기를 쓰는 거고요. 2004년 여름 희정이와 동생이 미국 프린스턴에 있는 헌스쿨(The Hun School) 여름 캠프에 등록했습니다. 40여 일 동안 미국에 살면서 아이들에게 영어일기를 쓰게 했어요.
희정이가 초등학교 6학년, 동생은 3학년이니 영어 수준에 차이가 있었습니다. ‘난생 처음 쓰는 영어일기’를 집필한 후로 아이들 일기에 관심이 많아 두 아이에게 모두 영어일기를 매일 쓰게 했습니다.
처음에는 길이도 짧고 문법적으로 많이 틀리기도 했지만 마지막에는 길이도 길어지고 내용도 읽을 만했습니다. 희정이는 문법책을 함께 공부했습니다. 30편을 넘어서니 문법도 거의 정확해졌습니다. 관사를 쓰려고 노력한 흔적이 보이며(때로는 그 노력이 과도해 money 앞에 a를 붙이기도 했어요.)
과거는 과거시제로, 결론도 “난 애틀랜타 시가 그립다”로 비교적 구체적으로 자신의 감정을 표현했습니다.
성원이는 저학년이라 문법을 공부하지 않았습니다. 그냥 자신이 배웠던 영어실력 안에서 변화가 있는 것이죠. 성원이는 작문 길이도 2배 정도 길어졌습니다.
성원이는 동사를 두 번 쓴 경우가 많았어요. 하지만 마지막 일기에서는 시제는 틀렸지만 첫 번째 일기에서 ‘are went, do fishing’이라고 쓰지는 않았어요.
내용도 영화의 줄거리를 비교적 조리있게 설명했습니다. 물론 ‘영화는 좋은 영화이다’라는 일반적인 결론을 내리는 것은 첫 번째 일기의 ‘오늘은 좋은 날이다’와 큰 변화는 없지만요. 어떤가요? 두 아이의 글을 보면 영어일기의 효과는 충분하지 않나요?

7/12 Tuesday (dance party)

Cherrybump is only for king, but Taylor cherry-bump at me and I＇m too angry. So I am confused last game. After I cherrybump at Taylor many times and I＇m so sorry for Taylor, so I said ＂good bye＂. Mom and brothers are threatened by me, and Sungwon bought a baseball & bat. So we are played baseball. We are played and played, so it＇s too boring. Jung-hyun started We are danced and sang a comic song. Ooh! That＇s very fun. I want to play baseball again.

 

<희정이의 마지막 일기>
August eighth Monday (Great Day)

Yesterday was a great day. We went to the Atlantic City. There were a lot of shops, rest-aurants, games and casinos.
Mom said, ＂Atlantic City is famous of casinos, like Las Vegas.＂ There were many people. Somebody was playing a music, and someone made games on the street to get the money. There was a beggar. I think, when he had a money, he played in the casino. Then he lost his own money. I think we must not give a money to him… Because when I give money to him, he will go to the casino again. Then he lost his own money again. When I am old, I will never play in the Casino and I never play with money.
We went to amusement park. We rode a crazy mouse. It was a roller coaster. Then we rode a Disco. It was like viking. But it was different. Because it was spinning. Then we rode a car. It spined very fast. Yesterday was a great day. I miss Atlantic City.

 

<성원이의 첫 번째 일기>
Title: Fishing
In the Hun School, we group 7C are went to river. We do fishing. I do fishing first time. I got a fish, we have a twenty two fishes. I like fishing. Fishes are very ugly. A bait is warm. It is good. Today is a very good day.

 

<성원이의 마지막 날 즈음의 일기>
Title: Watch Movie
I watched movie, movie＇s name is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Charlie is main character. Charlie has last Golden ticket. Fat Augustus ate chocolate and he fall in the chocolate river and Violet ate gum and she＇s body becomes violet, and she looks like a balloon, and Veruca falls in the trash can and Mike is small.
Only Charlie is in the Willy Wonka＇s chocolate factory. Willy Wonka is very surprised and go to his father and Willy Wonka go to Charlie＇s family. Charlie and the chocolate Factory is a very good movie.
